Will anyone top John Hunter Nemechek for Truck Series title?

The time has come for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series run toward the championship. With fifteen races in the books so far in the 2021 season, ten drivers are about to embark upon a seven-race stretch that will ultimately end with one racer being handed the big trophy at Phoenix Raceway. But of those ten drivers, one would seem to be the clear favorite. John Hunter Nemechek’s five victories have more than doubled those of his closest rivals in the number of race wins scored throughout the campaign. As a result of this year’s overall performance, the 24-year-old driver…

The Indy Road Course may produce a better race but it won’t be as prestigious

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is hallowed ground as far as the racing world is concerned. The 2.5-mile rectangular layout provides the setting for the most famous auto racing event in the world. The Indianapolis 500 has been contested every year since 1911 with the exception of the World War years. Winning at IMS would be a dream come true for any racer, and in 1994, the drivers from NASCAR would also be given the opportunity to experience that dream. And since then, legendary names such as Earnhardt, Gordon, Johnson and Jarrett have been among those NASCAR stars to visit the…

Ty Gibbs: True talent or a product of his situation?

One of the most interesting stories of the 2021 season so far in NASCAR has to be that of young Ty Gibbs. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver has definitely proven that he can win races at the NASCAR Xfinity Series level as well as on the ARCA Menard’s Series. His most recent effort this weekend at Watkins Glen International only further cemented the fact that he can wheel a race car as he won the Xfinity Series Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey 200 in convincing fashion by leading more than half of the contested laps on the road course located in…

Is Kyle Larson worthy of comparisons to Foyt, Andretti?

It has been quite some time since drivers such as A.J Foyt and Mario Andretti used to compete and win in virtually everything on four wheels. However, there has been a revival of that sort of competitor as this year we have witnessed a driver earn wins across many of the disciplines that make up the sport of auto racing. Kyle Larson is achieving things that most modern-day racing fans have never seen in their lifetimes by acquiring checkered flags and trophies from highly coveted races within the various forms of motorsports. It’s rare here in the 21st century to…

Less practice and qualifying for NASCAR stars means more dirt racing opportunities

Since the return by NASCAR from pandemic restrictions in 2020, there have been numerous changes to the way the sport goes about its business. Among the biggest of those changes has been an almost complete elimination in the areas of race weekend practice and qualifying. The result of those changes has been far reaching in that the impact has been felt in others forms of the sport. Over the past 15 months or so, there have been multiple NASCAR drivers who have entered dirt track, short track, and road course races that might not have been an option had the…

NASCAR getting what it wanted from the Playoffs format

The two most recent NASCAR Cup Series races held before the two-week Olympics break have seen drivers score wins who were either on the cutline in the series standings or were well out of contention in terms of making the NASCAR Playoffs based on their points position. As a result, the list of drivers who have a chance at making the cut and being in contention for the title has been in a state of flux during this midsummer time out. And it would stand to reason that NASCAR and its television partners are just fine with that. Others, however,…

Did Ross Chastain really do anything wrong?

Rarely has a driver who finished 21st been the topic of so much conversation following the conclusion of a race as has been Ross Chastain since the checkered flag waved over the Quaker State 400 Presented by Walmart. During the closing laps of the NASCAR Cup Series event held at the Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday, Chastain’s No. 42 car was in the process of being lapped by then leader Kyle Busch when Kurt Busch caught and passed his younger brother on his way to a victory and an almost certain spot in the upcoming NASCAR Playoffs. After the race,…

Next five weeks could make or break Kurt Busch’s 2021 season

Sixteen drivers will make the cut to become eligible for a shot at the NASCAR Cup Series championship with that cut set to be made following the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway seven weeks from now. Drivers who have won a race up to that point in the season will make the cut along with those highest in points who haven’t won until all sixteen spots are filled. If the NASCAR Playoffs cut were to be made today, Kurt Busch would be a championship contender … but just barely. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver is currently ranked…

Pocono Double Header Weekend Delivered on All Counts

I will freely admit that I have not always been a fan of the Pocono Raceway. I will also admit that I have not always been a fan of the 550 horsepower/high downforce package used at some tracks on the NASCAR Cup Series, including this one. But at the same time, I am not one of those people in today’s society that finds it impossible to admit that I might have been wrong about something. The two NASCAR Cup Series races held this weekend at Pocono Raceway delivered! On Saturday in the Pocono Organics CBD 325 there was a tense…

Does it take winning a championship to make a driver’s season “great”?

Among Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch, who had the better season in 2018? Logano ultimately won the NASCAR Cup Series championship in that year after scoring three victories throughout the season. Harvick and Busch finished third and fourth respectively in the final rundown but each won eight races over the course of the campaign. But in the end, it was Logano and his Team Penske No. 22 Ford who prevailed in the series finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway to claim the title. Of Logano’s three wins in 2018, two of them were very well timed as he won at…
