Stewart Friesen ready for Bristol and return of trucks to dirt

Few drivers who compete regularly in any of the top NASCAR divisions are more accomplished at dirt racing than Stewart Friesen. The native of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada is a veteran of Big Block Modified racing and has won many of the top events contested in that form of competition on clay surfaces. So needless to say, when the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series takes to the track on the dirt covered Bristol Motor Speedway later this week, the 37-year-old driver will be counted among the favorites to hoist the winner’s trophy. Aside from his prowess on dirt, there is ample…

Mixed results for Cup regulars on Friday night in Bristol Dirt Nationals

Three NASCAR Cup Series regulars entered the Karl Kustoms Bristol Dirt Nationals for Super Late Model machines on Friday night at the Bristol Motor Speedway. Each of those three competitors made it to the 25-lap feature out of the field of 53 cars that attempted to qualify and heat race with mixed results among them at the end of the evening. The most noteworthy NASCAR star with dirt racing experience is likely Kyle Larson. After competing almost exclusively on dirt last season following a suspension by NASCAR and a release from his ride with Chip Ganassi Racing, the Elk Grove,…

Decision to keep Austin Cindric in Xfinity Series for additional year paying off

There is sometimes a tendency to rush young race car drivers up to the highest levels of the sport too quickly. History offers numerous examples of those who were pushed up the ladder to the NASCAR Cup Series before they were ready then ultimately came crashing down. However, Team Penske fought the temptation to do that very thing with 22-year-old Austin Cindric after he was crowned the 2020 NASCAR Xfinity Series champion. Instead, the driver was left on that tour for another year to add to his experience level and to build confidence. Now five races into the 2021 season,…

Cup Series champions lead NASCAR contingent into Bristol Dirt Nationals

There will certainly be no shortage of star power in the Karl’s Kustoms Bristol Dirt Nationals during the coming week at the famed Bristol Motor Speedway. No fewer than three former NASCAR Cup Series champions as well as a former Daytona 500 winner and the hottest name in all of racing will be among the drivers competing on the clay covered high banks of the track located in the northeastern corner of Tennessee. When the decision was made to cover the normally concrete-surfaced half-mile track with dirt for the purpose of hosting NASCAR’s first Cup Series dirt race since the…

No regrets for John Hunter Nemechek after move from Cup to Trucks

Making it to the NASCAR Cup Series is typically considered the pinnacle for most American stock car racers. Getting there, even with one of the teams that may not be considered top tier, is often thought to be the realization of a life-long dream. To voluntarily leave the sport’s top level for the purpose of dropping down to one of the lower divisions would be considered by most within the sport as unthinkable. But at the end of the 2020 season, dropping down is exactly what John Hunter Nemechek did when he announced his intention to leave the Front Row…

Corey Heim looking to extend ARCA win streak in Phoenix

The ARCA Menards Series has been on hiatus for almost four weeks since its season opening thriller at the Daytona International Speedway. That break in the racing action, however, will end this Friday evening when the historic tour takes to the track at the Phoenix Raceway for the General Tire 150. This will only be the second race in the history of the national series on this one-mile track but the event will serve as a combination with the ARCA Menards Series West. That series has raced here multiple times under the former K&N West Series banner. One driver who…

Kurt Busch now has to be counted among Vegas favorites

NASCAR Cup Series racing isn’t like football of basketball where playing at home can provide a big advantage. The fact that a track just happens to be in a particular driver’s hometown or home state does not mean that particular racer is guaranteed to be a front runner. That said, however, any driver who races close to home will likely feel some added pressure to perform well in front of the people he/she grew up racing in front of on some local short track or karting facility. Kurt Busch felt that pressure every time the NASCAR Cup Series came to…

Tyler Reddick hoping to use Homestead to pile up points

Over the past few years, when fans and media of NASCAR have thought about the Homestead-Miami Speedway the name of Tyler Reddick is one of the first to come up. The Corning, CA native twice used that south Florida track to secure a NASCAR Xfinity Series championship when he won there in 2018 and 2019. And his trend of success continued in the Sunshine State in 2020 during his rookie campaign on the NASCAR Cup Series when he finished fourth on the 1.5-mile oval. The move by the series to one of his better tracks could not be coming at…
